Politicians Capers, Sustainable, I Don't Think So!
veena | Sep 15 2009

What are our Politicians upto? What are they trying to prove? I am completely in dark. Today’s buzzing word is “Economy” be it in air travel, lodging or even eating out.

I remember few years ago when I was working, one fine summer day, our main road faced a massive traffic jam, the office commuters were held up, naturally everyone was worried about reaching office in time. As our bus inched ahead there was a overflowing garbage dump on the right with its usual inhabitants of stray dogs, pigs and cows. The garbage as usual was always littered on the busy road. Well one enterprising ‘had been’ Politician was present in front of this dubious landmark with all the hanger ons and some MCD officials. The electronic media was also there but since he was not in the power only one or two reporters were there to cover the cleaning up process by him. Well as it always happens, the Big Man symbolically touched the broom, photographs were taken, clapping took place and he was off with folded hands and a smug smile on his face, after all his mission was accomplished.

As for us the unwilling spectators of the whole drama were left gnashing teeth and worries about the late mark in office. In the evening when I came back on the same route, it was business as usual, dogs and pigs were fighting over the juiciest bite from the freshly thrown garbage bag and cow were sitting placidly chewing cud and when I looked carefully she was eating the garland which in the morning was adorning the esteemed politicians’ neck.

Then there was Shashi Tharoor, another Minister eating out in Bengali market a favourite jaunt for middle class. No problem in that, but how come he was caught in the act and had his images splashed all over the media.

Krishna Tirath is going blue in face claiming that she has canceled her trip abroad to save money. S.M.Krishna will not charter a plane for his upcoming international commitments. Sonia travelled to Mumbai in Economy class and Rahul is planning to take a train next time he ventures out.

For how long this cosmetic trapping will continue? If you are planning to go economy please do it without any paraphernalia of battery of reporters covering your every move.

In fact try something more connected to us common public. Just go to any Government hospital, educational institution or office incognito and than you will come to know the harsh ground realities which any common man has to face day in and day out. Than give instructions to the person incharge to streamline the work in his office, follow up regularly, and I am sure there will be a difference in the right direction.

If the common man will find positive changes no matter how small he will be satisfied and grateful. Than it just would not matter if you travel by any superclass or even hire AirForce 1. No one will grudge at the expenditure.
